Lotus Supports the Int’l March for Elephants

On October 4, 2013, Friday is the March for Elephants, an international campaign to be held in 15 cities all over the world.

In San Francisco, supporters will gather at 10 am in Portsmouth Square, 733 Kearny St. and march at11am to Union Square for a rally.

The goal is to raise awareness, urging people to join the battle to save the elephants. Elephants are engulfed in a crisis. About 36, 000 elephants were slaughtered last year alone. The huge demand for ivory, especially in China, elephants are now facing extinction in 10 years.

Elephant and Indian Culture

In Kerala, Southern India, Elephant is an important cultural icon. It is the home to the largest domesticated population of Indian elephant and referred to as the “sons of the sahya”. Elephant is the state animal of Kerala and is featured on the emblem of the Government of Kerala.

Today, the loss of habitat is the man threat facing the Indian elephants due to increasing human population. Since 1986, Asian elephant has been listed as endangered.
